Unlearning the Bedouin Interpretation of Islam for Women

There are various fabricated Hadiths or traditions of Prophet Muhammad, peace on him, that men with heads full of balls have repeated to themselves to make Muslim women look inferior. Perhaps these fabricated Hadith started off as folklore in the deserts of Arabia in Bedouin camps.

One of the funny fabricated Hadiths reads that Muslim men would get virgins for wives in Paradise, and each time they deflower those virgins the latter would get their hymens back. What? What’s the point? How would the virgins feel about this? Each time they have sex they’d bleed. And, why would sane heavenly men enjoy this except if they were blood-shedders of camels in this lifetime? Would nice Muslim women like to marry such men?

Doesn’t make any sense.

Of course, they made so many lies in the name of Hadiths that we should be using our commonsense before believing in Islamic scholars’ (rather, mullahs’) judgments of them. Prophet Muhammad was a good man, after all.

So men were told by mullahs that they’d get Hoors or heavenly maidens in Paradise. Hoors are mentioned in the Koran. But here’s the real meaning of Hoor. Because God is Just — both believing men and believing women, that is, the good people, get Hoors! Even if they’re Christians or Jews, they may get Hoors.

And, what are Hoors?

The mullahs were wrong, of course. Here’s the real translation of Hoors — Hoor being a word applicable to both males and females; an androgynous word:

HOOR

One of the objections raised against Islam is that it informs us of some beautiful maidens known as “Hoor” which will be reserved for the men of paradise as objects of luxury. Quite often, the Clergy, under the influence of the literature which was compiled and authenticated in those days when true Quranic government of Muslims was overtaken by that of the despotic rule of Monarchs and Theocracy, characterizes some verses of the Qur’an where the word “Hoor” occurs, to be as such.

However, it should be understood that the Arabic word “Hoor” which occurs four times in the Qur’an is plural of “Ahwar” which is for the masculine gender and “Hawrau” which is for the feminine gender.

Thus the word “Hoor” is not restricted to the female gender only, but represents both men as well as women. Its basic meaning is the whiteness of the eye, and also signifies a clean and pure intellect of a person, free from vile intentions. (cf.: Lane, Qamus. Asad-”The Message of the Qur’an”).

From this word also comes the word “Al-Hawariyun” which has been used in the Qur’an for the disciples of Jesus Christ (p), as they were persons having purified souls.

In the Qur’an, where it is mentioned for the believers in a state of heaven:

“..and We shall pair them with companions of pure eyes..” (52:20)

Then it does not imply a relationship as a husband and wife, but simply means that in “Jannah” the believers will have companions of pure intellect, which will include, men as well as women.

Meaning of Hoor

The word hoor is actually the plural of ahwar (applicable to man) and of haura (applicable to woman) and signifies a person having eyes characterized by hauar a special quality bestowed upon a good soul, male or female in paradise and it denotes the intense whiteness of the white part of the spiritual eye.

The Quran describes in several other verses that in paradise you will have azwaj which mean a pair or spouse or companion which means you will have spouses or companions pure and holy (mutaharratun means pure, holy).

“But give glad tidings to those who believe and work righteousness, that their portion is gardens, beneath which rivers flow. Every time they are fed with fruit there from, they say: “Why, this is what we were fed with before”, for they are given things in similitude; and they have therein companions pure (and holy); and they abide therein (forever)”. [Al-Quran 2:25]

“But those who believe and do deeds of righteousness, We shall soon admit to Gardens, with rivers flowing beneath – their eternal home; therein shall they have companions pure and holy: we shall admit them to shades, cool and ever deepening”. [Al-Quran 4:57]

Therefore the word hoor has no specific gender. Mohammad Asad has translated the word hoor as spouse and Abdullah Yusuf Ali as companion. Therefore according to some scholars a man in paradise will have a hoor that is a beautiful maiden with beautiful big and lustrous eyes and a woman in paradise will get a man with beautiful big and lustrous eyes.
